what is trauma-informed personal training?

Whether a client reaches out to me specifically with a TI-PT inquiry or not, it's how I approach all my clients. At the core of my work, I treat and work with clients as whole human beings, with their own unique histories, experiences and goals when it comes to connecting to their bodies and movement. There is not a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to training clients. I work with each of my clients individually to collaboratively create a program that works for them. I come in to a session with a plan, but also a plan B or plan C based on what my client’s needs are that particular day. In the fitness world, the trainer is often looked at as the expert, and carries all the power. With a trauma-informed approach, the client is the expert of their body, while I come in as a guide and work in partnership with my clients.

Here is an outline of my tenets as a TI-PT:

Safety

My client’s physical and emotional safety is my top priority. I create an environment rooted in support and compassion. I ensure that your body is safe in every exercise during your session.

Choice

While I create my clients fitness programming, they always have the right to choose and make a shift if anything makes them feel scared or uncomfortable. Movement can always be modified.

Collaboration

The work we do together is in partnership. You are the expert in your body and I am here to support you on your journey.

Trust

Consistency, honesty in communication, and healthy professional boundaries all increase trustworthiness with my clients.

Empowerment

I strive to help my clients learn about their bodies and advocate for their own unique needs.

I help them safely access engagement and activation of their muscles.

I help the build the capacity to be able to detect any shifts in their form and alignment, on their own.

I aid them in increasing their ability to navigate stress while staying embodied.

The work that takes place in our movement practices, directly affects and translates out into our daily lives. How we approach movement is how we approach our lives.
